Simplot has been awarded Gold in the Save Food Packaging Design Special Award category at the 2026 Australasian Packaging Innovation & Design (PIDA) Awards, recognising the impact of its redesigned Birds Eye Frozen Single Vegetables packaging.
Presented by the Australasian Institute of Packaging (AIP), the PIDA Awards celebrate excellence in packaging innovation across Australia and New Zealand. Simplot's winning entry was recognised for a practical enhancement that helps consumers reduce food waste at home: a resealable closure that makes it easier to prevent spills, use only what is needed and safely store the remaining product for later use.
While simple in design, the innovation addresses a common consumer challenge and supports more sustainable household food habits. By helping consumers keep frozen vegetables fresher and reduce unnecessary waste, the packaging delivers both convenience and environmental benefits.
The award forms part of the global SAVE FOOD Initiative, which was established in 2011 to help reduce food loss and waste across the food value chain and support the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals. The initiative highlights the important role packaging can play in preserving food, extending shelf life and minimising waste from production through to consumption.
For Simplot, the recognition demonstrates how thoughtful, consumer-focused innovation can contribute to meaningful sustainability outcomes. The redesigned Birds Eye packaging reflects the company's commitment to developing practical solutions that enhance product experience while helping reduce food waste.
As a Gold winner, Simplot is now eligible to represent Australia and New Zealand at the 2027 WorldStar Packaging Awards, one of the world's most respected packaging competitions.
The achievement is a testament to the collaboration, expertise and innovation of the teams involved in bringing the packaging enhancement to life, further strengthening Simplot's leadership in sustainable and consumer-focused packaging solutions.
