Independent testing supports our Australian Grown labelling
At Leggo’s, product integrity, provenance, responsible sourcing and truth in advertising are fundamental to everything we do.
In July, the ABC Four Corners story ’Duped: Food Exposed’ made allegations about the truthfulness of our ‘AUS GROWN’ label on certain Leggo’s tomato paste products. These allegations were based on testing commissioned by the ABC. From our own enquiries, the testing laboratory was not accredited for the methodology used, and the underlying reference database was not accredited either. We rejected the allegations at the time. We were not given enough time before publication to undertake our own accredited testing, and the ABC and its testing provider have not provided the test results for independent verification, including since publication. We have since commissioned our own accredited testing, the results of which we can now share.
Eurofins Food Testing Australia Pty Ltd, as part of the Eurofins global network of laboratories, commissioned the testing of the Leggo’s tomato paste products featured in the story. Eurofins Analytics France SAS completed accredited stable isotope (SIRA) testing on our tomato paste products and found them to be consistent with Australian origin with 99 per cent probability. SIRA testing is well established and measures naturally occurring elements in soils, crops, fruits and vegetables, and foods made from them.
These laboratory results match our own documented records. Our traceability process follows our products through manufacturing records, ingredient inputs and supplier verification, all the way back to the Australian paddocks where the tomatoes are grown. Our supply chain is also independently audited every year to verify our Australian grown claims.
Our Australian grown tomato paste is processed and packed in Echuca, from tomatoes grown by farmers in northern Victoria and southern New South Wales, close to our factory.
These disproven allegations matter beyond our business. Leggo’s is one of the last large-scale processors of Australian vegetables, and many Australian growers, workers and regional communities depend on us.
Accurate and truthful product labelling and responsible sourcing are central to our business and supply chains. Leggo’s has been trusted by Australian families for more than 100 years, and we remain proud to support Australian growers and local manufacturing.
Thank you to everyone who continues to choose Leggo’s.

Leggo's published the following response regarding allegations aired by ABC Four Corners.
At Leggo’s, product integrity, provenance and responsible sourcing are fundamental to everything we do.
We refute the claims raised in the ABC Four Corners program regarding the origin of tomatoes used in certain Leggo’s products. We have reviewed the matters raised by the ABC and our records confirm the tomatoes used in products labelled “Australian-grown” are grown right here in Australia.
Our verification process traced the products through manufacturing records, ingredient inputs, supplier verification records and ultimately to the Australian paddocks where the tomatoes were grown.
We have also engaged directly with our supplier, who maintains sophisticated traceability capabilities and stands by its Australian-grown produce.
Notwithstanding our complete confidence in our supply chain, we have commissioned an independent audit to confirm our internal records and further assure our customers and stakeholders.
Our Australian grown and produced tomato paste is processed and packed in Echuca from tomatoes grown by farmers in Northern Victoria and Southern NSW close to our factory.
Leggo’s has a long history of proudly sourcing from and partnering with Australian farmers, helping to support a strong and sustainable Australian food industry. We believe in the importance of accurate product labelling, responsible sourcing, and respect for human rights across our business and supply chains.
